Mendelssohn’s imagination was fired by the past. Standing in the ruins of Holyrood House in Edinburgh, he mused ‘Grass and ivy grow at the broken altar where Mary was crowned Queen of Scotland’.
Here his Symphony No.3 begins, often referred to as the Scottish
Symphony. It evokes the wild Romantic landscapes of Scotland and its rich past.
Strauss’ suite from the opera Der Rosenkavalier is also brilliantly passionate. It’s a dazzling, silvery tale of emotion and romance and is one of Strauss’ most captivating works, performed here alongside celebrated opera overtures by Mozart and Weber.
