Teachers Conducting Masterclass

Professional Development Workshops

A new addition to our professional development program in 2025, this Teachers Conducting Masterclass will support music teachers to become more confident and effective when leading their own students. Under the leadership of Conductor in Residence Benjamin Northey, teachers will have a rare opportunity to conduct Sydney Symphony Orchestra musicians in a range of repertoire and will receive feedback on their communication skills and technique.

Benjamin Northey is one of Australia’s leading conductors and is passionate about music education. From his own studies at Melbourne University, VCA and the world-famous Sibelius Academy in Finland, to his longtime association with Melbourne and Australian Youth Orchestras, Northey knows the extraordinary influence a great music teacher can have on a young mind.

This is an ideal opportunity for teachers who regularly conduct secondary ensembles, who are invited to apply to be one of just eight participants in the workshop. And all teachers are invited to attend and observe, to learn valuable skills and techniques to help you inspire the students in your care.
